Very good. The decor is adorable, ambience is upscale casual and the food was very tasty. I have the chicken tacos which I rated a 4 out of 5. and my daughter had the chicken enchilada Verde. She rated her enchilada also a 4 out of 5. Both were delicious. The $3 Pepsi in a 6" (10oz) cup was the worst tho. Big. Rip. Off. But they DID take our extra food away and wrap it for us instead of just bringing the box and dropping it off at the table. Which I prefer.

There's something so pleasing about the exterior architecture and interior decor of this restaurant that I want so badly to like it. I went there once with my family many years ago (and we left disappointed), but I gave in to the architectural allure and tried it again with my wife a few months ago. Same result. Unfortunately, if you're looking for good Mexican food, you're probably better off finding a hole-in-the-wall in a strip mall somewhere. Hay Caramba is overpriced and just kind of bland. The guacamole that is famously "made at your table" is a portion that a mouse would scoff at. I'm surprised at all the reviews of how excellent the food is. I've had better tacos when I've made them myself with ingredients from Jewel. Very disappointing.

Went to Hay Caramba for an after work celebration dinner. We had 7 people, so we made a reservation online, which was super easy. We were seated right away. I had a frozen strawberry margarita... Yum! It was only $8.25 so I'm not sure why others have said it was so expensive? I enjoyed my meal, the Hay Caramba combination platter ($12). We all shared the flan and deep fried ice team, both of which were delicious as well. Overall, it's a great vibe, great location/ easy parking, very friendly staff and decent pricing.

Loved this place! Plenty of parking, yummy food and margaritas. Prompt service with beautiful decor. I had the ixtapa combination and we all shared margarita pitchers. I was here for a birthday, so the ambience was loud and vibrant on a Friday night. The portions are just the right size too, but I think the food was a little overpriced but the service made up for it. They were nice and the food came out pretty quickly, considering we had a party of about 10 people. They served chips and salsa while we ordered and waited for our food. My dish was fresh and a nice sample of different main dishes they have. Overall I was pretty happy and I'm glad I tried this place. I would definitely come back here again. Great for groups, dates, but not a romantic one - it's a pretty loud area so just keep that in mind.

We were there last year around this time for my wife's birthday in August 2014. We had two custom margaritas each at the bar for around $100. That was with tip. We have never been back since.

Been here a few times. Live close by but haven't had the best experiences here. Went there again strictly for convenience. Again good and bad. Food was good. Not great but good. Sangria was good also. Now the service was bad though. Waitress was not friendly but still got good order right. Even though I ordered a drink at same time as dinner and got dinner 1st. She never came by to say anything. And after that she was even less friendly. Like it was our fault!!! Unreal. Id go back again only for convenience. Definitely better Mexican places around but this is still ok on occasion.

I've never been disappointed here... and I've been to Hay Caramba a lot. You definitely get your moneys worth in quality and quantity. It's one of those places where I've tried almost everything on the menu at least once. My favorites are the combo platters where you can get a little of each entree all at once. There are daily specials so try that out of you are undecided on what to get. The complementary chips and salsa are good. Salsa spice may sneak up on you if you wolf it down. Staff is helpful and attentive. Your table has a server of course but it seems like everyone works together to make sure everything is going fine. Sitting outside (weather permitting) is nice as it overlooks the uptown Park Ridge area.

The food was great, but the customer service was not as good as i wanted it to be. We sat at the bar, and the bartender wasn't friendly at all. She would ask the customers that were next to us if everything was ok, and if they needed anything, but when it came down to us she never asked. I felt uncomfortable, like if I wasn't wanted there, so I left. Im not sure if I'll go back.

First thing i'll say is this is a nice looking restaurant. They have seating set up outside to side of the large front doors that open up directly to the bar area. Large , high, sky lit ceiling during the day. Plenty of table room. Looked like a nice place to take a date. Today I tried their steak tacos. Got 3 tacos with rice and refry beans. The tacos themselves were pretty good (better with their hot salsa). Their hot salsa really wasnt that hot but was still good. The beans were just ok. But, the rice was over cooked and pretty bland. I ordered carryout at the bar. The server was very friendly. All and all what i ordered was was pretty good, but a little expensive (just over $12 for a 3 (kinda small) taco meal)for what i got. Either way i probably wouldnt mind stopping back again to try something else. Would of give 3.5 if I could.

Amazing tacos and quesadillas! I ordered veggie quesadillas and they were delicious. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I had flan for dessert and I think it was the best Flan I have ever had. When we got the check they left us some chocolates (which were very good). I will definitely come here again.

I feel sorry for the Park Ridge community if this is what they think is authentic and good Mexican food. This was the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. The chips were hard and stale, the salsa was watery, the tortillas were definitely not made in house and tasted like they were old and store bought, the horchata was chalky and tasted like a powder mix, tasted nothing like authentic horchata. I would rather drive all the way to Garcia's in Lincoln Park to avoid this place

Food is really good! Guacamole is made table side and was delicious! 4 stars because they close so early! 9 pm on a Thursday night and 10 pm on weekends.

This is a good Mexican restaurant. It is large, open, and clean. The waiter was pleasant and accommodating and the food was good. The salsa was a bit on the mild side and nothing to write home about. The burritos were very flavorful but again more American style as to their spice content. We liked the margaritas for both their size and price. Overall a good experience especially for Park Ridge.

  • Nicole J.

I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately the food was not good (shrimp not fresh, had terrible dishwater taste), menu overpriced (kids chicken fingers were $10, combo fajitas $19!), slow service and worst of all...the margaritas were AWFUL! How does a Mexican restaurant screw up margaritas??? The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of one is because the staff is very friendly and the restaurant itself was lovely and clean.

I really enjoyed our outing here. They have a cozy, friendly, and colorful high ceiling'd dining space, and the food was quite good and reasonably priced to boot. Wife and I had their no. 1 (Hay Caramba) and no. 2 (Ixtapa) combo dinners, each $10.95. Decent bottled Mexican beer selections. Easy free street parking right out front on Prospect Ave. We'll be back.

I went here one night based on recommendations, and I knew that there must be a reason I've never been to this place living in Park Ridge all of my life. That reason is because it's not that good. The decor is cute. The host was very sweet and friendly. Our waiter was fantastic. He was super attentive and I had people continuously filling my glass of water throughout my dinner. Our appetizer came out super quick (Queso Fundido - which was just OK. It was super rubbery and not so queso-like). Food came out minutes after we ordered. I ordered Steak and Chicken Fajitas and everything was good on my plate but the steak. Dry, lacked flavor and just bad overall. The guacamole is very good. My husband ordered the Carne Esada (Skirt Steak) and it was very good. Tender, juicy and tasty. That was probably the only good thing ordered. I ordered coffee and it tasted dirty and gritty. Kind of like instant coffee. I'm sure that's what it was. My husband ordered flan and he said it was terrible. I hate knocking this place because everyone was so kind, but the food just wasn't good and I won't be returning.

Ay, ya, ya, yay, canta y no llores . . .yup, the Mariachi band was rockin' it. My first visit to this little restaurant in the village of Park Ridge. That's Indian for land of criss-crossed streets. The brightly covered tables and the band had me up doing a Salsa, while the others around me were busy eating their salsa. On a busy Saturday evening our wait was about 2 minutes. Everyone raved about their selected entrees, and no one wanted to share. Just an excuse to return to try something else. Service was just right providing a chance to visit and catch up with our dinner guests. Of course, the mariachi band did require us to use our outdoor voices, but then again, so was everyone else. Loved the décor and the whole enchilada. Packaged just right. Ole.

I used to go here a lot - we're talking a couple of times a month. I'd always rock the steak tacos (love that there's no upcharge for cheese and sour cream) and a pitcher of margaritas. Oh, and that pitcher is shared with friends, not just for myself - I don't have those powers! I also dug their fried ice cream. Yum. I stopped going when they got a little weird about their beans. Yes, beans. I never ate the beans that came with the meal, so I asked if I could just have more rice instead, and they said no. That's cool, but after awhile, they stopped serving me beans altogether, and just left that part of the plate bare. Umm, ok. Well one day I decided to rock my accounting skills, and figured out that if I ordered three tacos and a side of rice I'd save $1.25 over the cost of the taco meal. And that's what I started to do. Too bad they kept charging me for the full meal. So, each time I'd get my check I'd have to argue that I never received beans, ordered everything a la carte, and would like to be charged as such. So ya, would've been a perfect five stars, but I have to take off two for the waste of time that always occurs when I get my check.

Beautiful restaurant. The best salsa and chips. They fill up your water fast which is great. The downside, it's expensive for Mexican food. Rice and beans do not cost a lot of money. I would go here more if the portions were bigger or the prices were a few dollars less.

    (3)
  • Jessica A.

The owner is genuine and reminds me of my friends abuelita. Food was traditional and priced well, most guests are stuck up upper class people so that's where the money is for this restaurant. I feel bad that this beautiful woman has to deal with that, but she deserves the most respect and success. This is my favorite mexican restaurant in the suburbs.

  • Juli A.

Quite possibly the fourth worst Mexican I've ever had. I need to commit to memory that Mexican food should never be eaten in a sit down restaurant in the Northwest suburbs. Chips were bought, mole either from a can or a powder. Guacamole is not avocado and pico de gallo, it's got peppers, onions, cilantro, lime and salt. If you like Mexican and you're not from the Northwest suburbs avoid it. If you're local shame on you. 4 stars my ass.

Best Mexican food around! love the Carne Asada, guacamole, enchiladas and Margaritas! Have had parties catered from here and even had my neices Bridal Shower there. This place was "ok." My bartender was attentive so the service was good. The ambience is a pretty typical family style Mexican restaurant. The food was very average as well. The one thing that stood out were the chips and salsa. The chips were very crunchy. Too crunchy for my tastes.

Great ambience and service, their sauces are very good but pur chicken and huevos con chorizo were over cooked... They have a good ceviche!

This is a great casual restaurant that I like to visit once a month. They have amazing tamales with a rich red sauce that tastes amazing. If you like tamales, these are a must try. Service is always consistent and the waiters are very accommodating. Check this place out, you won't be disappointed!

I met 2 friends here for a weeknight girls night. I wasn't super impressed. We walked in about 6pm on a Thursday and the place was pretty packed. We were seated right away. The chips and salsa came out right away. That salsa is hot, so watch yourself. To start, we ordered a pitcher of sangria because one person in my group didn't like margaritas. I know, weird. The sangria came and the best way to describe it would be cloudy fruit juice. It did not taste good, and the wine must have been very, very diluted. We ordered the guacamole and thought it was fun that it was made tableside. The others in my group don't like anything too spicy, so we ordered it mild. It tasted very fresh, but it was basically just mushed up avocados - no tomato chunks, no onion chunks, and just a few tiny pieces of pepper. And for $8, you don't get very much. Finally, our meals came. I ordered the tostadas and sampled both their chicken and guacamole kinds. The chicken tostada was great. The chicken was well seasoned and very tender. I traded one of my tostadas for a tamale my friend ordered, and the tamale was delicious too. The guacamole tostada was not good though. It was just bland guacamole on a tortilla. I didn't even attempt to eat the second one. We were there for a while, chatting and catching up, and we were never bothered except to have out sangria and water glasses re-filled, so that was nice. I guess next time I'll order a margarita, skip the guacamole and load up on chicken tostadas and tamales, because I would be back for those.

This place is excellent. The guacamole is made table side and the tacos al pastor were amazing. But most of all the service was great and with a smile. And the place is always packed!! A good sign!

I've had better mex, but I do enjoy this spot's food. In my 3 visits, I've had tacos, chimichangas, and flautas. They do make great guac that's made right in front of you - but it's on the pricey side. I guess they rolled labor costs into it somehow, ha! Can get very crowded during the weekend but I suppose that's a good sign and you'll see most tables with big groups.

I have been coming to hay caramba ever since I was a little girl, it is simply the best Mexican restaurant hands down. Their service is great, everyone there is super friendly. The owners treat you like family which makes you feel very warm & welcome. Their frozen margaritas are delicious! I really enjoy their steak, the jumbo shrimp camarones, and their soups! They can also make guacamole for you at your table from scratch! I highly recommend going here.

Arrived at Hay Caramba late in the afternoon on a Saturday. I presumed the man standing by the desk inside was the Host, although he didn't smile or even say hello to us. Everyone has a bad day, but if you are a Host you are representing your restaurant & should be polite regardless of your mood. The waitress arrived at our table & was nice. My husband ordered the Pollo En Salsa Verde which is chicken strips, sauteed with onions & green tomatillo sauce ($13.50 and I ordered the chicken soft tacos (10.95). When our dishes arrived, we were immediately dismayed to see the small portions of both entrees. The 3 tacos on my plate were mini sized with a small bit of rice & beans. My husband's chicken strips entree looked like a childs sized portion. The food was adequate, but nothing special. Suffice to say, the best thing we ordered here was the draft beer that came with our meal. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you like tortilla chips & beer.

If your a straight up suburbanite American with no cultural of culinary knowledge you will love this place. Definitely a step up from taco bell. If you have any intellect or interest on dinning or cuisine what so ever you will stay away from here. Their pico de galo is loaded with salt in order to mask their poor selection of produce. The queso fundito was so watery that when I complained the owner told me it had mozzarella in it.... How is that a Mexican dish? Even Mozzarella should not be watery when melted. The only appealing thing about this establishment is the decor, it seems as if they put all their effort into the looks of the place, even tough they spelled Ay caramba, "hay caramba", where's Bart Simpson and homer? Do not eat here if you want quality food, stay away if you have any decency for quality. Try sol de Mexico or even a local taco shack.

  • Monica E.

I wouldn't reccomend going here to a friend. Service was not that great and the food was bland. Only thing I liked about this place was that they made the guac in front of you which wasn't enough to compensate any of the disatrous food I forcefully indugled that night. Decor is cute but I guess that doesn't help either.

Great food & service. Parking kinda stinks (Street) but the warm service of the owners make it well worth it!!

Steady, reliable, classic "Americanized" Mexican food. The food will probably not blow you away, but this place isn't meant to be on the level of Frontera Grill or others like it. The grub is, quite simply, good. The interior is spacious and filled with natural light, and they have a nice patio. The salsa is thin, but very tasty, with a nice kick. The chips could use an overhaul, as some stale ones sometimes end up in the basket. I personally love the tostadas, just dribble some of that salsa on top or ask for some raw jalapeño if you want to ramp up the spice. Table side guacamole is a little hokey, but you know it's fresh.

  • Tracey M.

Very mediocre. I wanted to get a burrito and come to realize it's $8 not including rice and beans. Okay of course add the rice what mexican dinner would it be without it!? First it said burro grande which it was a pathetic large burrito for $8! For me eatting there alone it was NOT worth it! If it was the BEST burrito I had I wouldn't say a word but the steak was nothing special and the rice and beans were salty to taste. I just moved to the area and was excited to try but I guess the hunt continues for a good mexican meal.

I started with the house margarita. It was delicious. Very tasty. Not much on alcohol though. But I do drink a lot so I may be biased. But still very good. I had two. I ordered the enchiladas with ranchero sauce. They tasted very good. I like the taste and flavor .... But they were very dry. I know that sounds weird but the sauce some how made them very dry. No wetness or dripping sauce when eating. It was good but not great. I don't know. That sounds weird but it was just lacking the greatest. I would order them again but will hope they have that extra push to make them great. The beans were very good. Delicious. The rice was very dry too. Know sure what that issue is here.

Ha ha this place may have a Mexican name but, the food has a American taste. Yes, they serve Mexican food but it tastes like crap. It was also expensive. The positive part, is it was fast and good service.

The food was just ok. I enjoyed it but I've definitely had more authentic food elsewhere. The service was good. The building is beautiful and worth the trip just to look at. I'll probably be back

Hay Caramba's food is absolutely wonderful. Their fresh Guacamole is so great, and I love that they make it right in front of you, and ask if you'd like it spicy. The Margaritas are delicious and pretty decently sized. Their Steak Fajitas are excellent. I definitely think it's the best Mexican food in the area. The atmosphere is great, too. It's definitely a place to go with your family or on a date! My only complaint is about service. It seemed like too many, yet not enough, people were working the floor, and every few minutes we had a new person. The person who seated us, took our order, brought us our food, made our guacamole, and refilled our water were ALL different. Which one was our "waiter/waitress"? I sure hope they are on tip share!

  • Mike K.

Food average at best and could they be any slower with the seating. The only reason they are still open is because Park Ridge doesn't have a Taco Bell that serves alcohol.

Normally, Hay Caramba is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants to go to over lunch. They have fantastic and reasonably priced lunch specials, a fun and lively atmosphere, and great service. Recently I went in for a light dinner and drinks with friends. The bar service was exceptional. The bartender was very attentive, and she made some killer margaritas. As for the food, it was good as well. It's not the best or most authentic Mexican I've had, but it's definitely worthy of going back again, and again. ((Chances are I wouldn't drive up from Roselle to Park Ridge for it, but when in the area I'm always down!)) My favorite dish of the night was hands down the Tortilla soup ((tomato base broth with a hint of chipotle pepper, crispy tortilla strips, anejo cheese, avocado and sour cream)). It was so flavorful and had the perfect combination of sweet & spicy. The added sour cream and avocado made for an extra creamy component. YUMZ. I also had a Cheese Enchilada with Salsa Rachera sauce, and your standard side of some beans and rice. ((Note: They will sell you items a la carte - but you have to ask)). Later in the evening my sweet tooth kicked in and my bf and I split an order of Sopapillas ((tortilla wedges with brown sugar, cinnamon, honey and whipped cream)). It was the perfect snack! Not too sugary, and definitely not too heavy. It paired nicely with the margarita, too! Prices are great. Especially at lunch time. You can get quite the filling meal for under ten bucks. It's just too bad I can't have one of those margaritas on my lunch break. Boo.

The food here is good, but the value is not. The food is your typical Mexican fare. Also, we noticed that some of the staff is very nice and others aren't very friendly at all. We came here with our young daughter and waited an extremely long time for our food (it wasn't very busy either). Not to mention a kids' chicken finger meal is TEN BUCKS! If you want to 'splurge' on Mexican food, go here... Otherwise, I'd say go elsewhere.

$134 fed 6 adults. We all enjoyed our entrees, apps and drinks. The table side guacamole was good, they make it as spicy or mild as you like. The good thing about table side is that they can't cut it with mayo and fake the funk. We will return.

Beautiful inside. Ambiance was nice. Meals were very good (Chicken Fajitas & Steak with cheese enchilada). I agree with other poster about the enchilada being dry. I mean how is that possible? But it tasted that way. I loved the steak though. Wish they would have had something resembling a children's menu. My kids love tacos but there wasn't even an option. Ended up just feeding them off of our plates. Seemed family run. We had several people waiting on us and one that seemed to be "Mama" really watched over us. I would go back.

Nice bar, good margaritas deserve 3 stars. Not the best margaritas, I think Zocalo's in River North are better, but decent. The food is alright too. My friend and I got quesadillas and fajitas and both were A-OK. I wouldn't go out of my way to dine here but when I come to Park Ridge, it is a decent option for Mexican food. Service was friendly at the bar too.

This restaurant was only 15 minutes away from my place. I was scrolling through yelp and I came across this restaurant. My bf and I came for dinner and just wanted to try it out. The atmosphere was decent. When you enter the restaurant you will come across the bar area first. Kinda small. The main dining you will noticed the high ceiling which was interesting. On a thursday night it was kinda packed. I noticed the prices were kinda pricey given that it's in the town of park ridge but still 3 tacos and rice with beans for $12? I just thought it's not reasonably priced, but my bf ordered it anyway bcuz he was too hungry. I had BISTECK A LA MEXICANA it was delicious. Along with my meal I had horchata. Over all it wasn't that bad...

So lets be honest we all like honesty right? Go to taco bell its better. The decor is nice. Looks like they spent a lot of money decorating the place. But true Mexican food is what is missing. Do yourself a favor don't bother eating here 9.00 for guacamole and its 1 avocado. I don't know about you but I can pick up an avocado for 99 cents at the most. The first bite of food we found a hair in it. They replaced the food fast which makes me believe its pre made frozen and microwaved. It bothers me when I eat somewhere and after I get the bill I realize I could have gone elsewhere and got better food for what I spent. Bottom line the food is poor quality the decor is nice. But last time I checked I didn't pay to lick the walls. Hey that may have tasted better. ;)

A friend and I had dinner at Hay Caramba last Friday and ordered guacamole for an appetizer. The server came to our table and made FRESH guacamole right in front of us allowing us to have some input regarding the ingredients. Hmmm, delish. Then came dinner. I had the Pollo en Mole...fantastico !!! Hay Caramba !! I'll be back !! My friend however had the Milanesa and commented that it was just ok, a little dry. I should note that my friend is always fussy and should not be taken too seriously. Oh, I should mention that the place was packed. ( dinner time). You might want to get there early... Or.... after 9:00 pm when the crowd thins out. Then again, you can always wait at the bar and have a couple of pre-dinner drinks. I've eaten there before and will definitely return. The mole sauce is excellent !!! Hay Caramba , nos vemos en seguida.

One of the most beautiful Mexican restaurants you will visit. It's your traditional Mexican/American menu, but go for the chicken mole. They ought to bottle it. Really yummy. Good Margaritas too.

I have had better mexican food but Hay Caramba provides such an overall wonderful experience that it steps up its quality and makes coming here so much fun. So much fun in fact that I've been dining here for the past 10 years, including the olden days at their previous location. The dining area is a beautiful open room with high ceilings and rows of colorful tables that give it a "I'm casually sitting in an outdoor patio enjoying a home-cooked meal" kind of feeling. The waitstaff is friendly, consistent and familial; the food is consistent, authentic and well-priced. Overall, Hay Caramba is a great place to grab a casual lunch or dinner with close friends or family and enjoy a fun, comfortable meal.

Straight forward Mexican fare with great atmosphere. Nice outdoor patio in front.

I say that it has the best Mexican food in Park Ridge. They sold me on the endless ("free") chips and salsa they put out. The salsa is spicy and not too chunky, perfect in my book. The atmosphere is top notch especially on a summer day. The building is Spanish Missionary style architecture with very high ceilings. You can sit outside and enjoy a small courtyard they have and have a view of a near by church. The prices are reasonable, the alcohol selection decent, and the food is all you could hope for.

Another girls' night, we went back to the scene of the crime. This time, though, service was lacking. Ambiance - still 5 out of 5 Service - 1 out of 5. Our server did the bare minimum & could not even be bothered to smile. I promise you were were not demanding customers at all. We were nice, friendly, and thanked any staff who came to our table to give us our food and refill our water. What happened to the friendly people we met last time? Food - still 4 out of 5 Cleanliness - 5 out 5 Free street parking - 5 out of 5 Will probably not go back unless my friends really, really, really want to come back here. Our pouting waitress left us with a bad impression.

The KGB and I had lunch at Hay Caramba yesterday - this, after several dinners. One big difference - no drinking margaritas at lunch, as we were doing business. Boo hoo! So, other Yelpers have talked about the space. It is big and airy. There is a large skylight over the center of the dining room, which provides nice natural lighting. There is a bar area near the front, at which I've lingered occasionally. It's fine too. Unlike other Yelpers, I've never been to the original location, so I can't offer any comparisons with the current location. At lunch, the place is not busy. But try going on a weeknight! The place gets totally packed, with local workers, people stopping off for dinner when they get off the Metra (the stop is one block away), and an awful lot of families. Service has always been good, very professional. Dirty dishes and glasses only linger a few minutes. Water glasses, coffee cups and diet cokes get refilled quickly. Food comes out hot. The food is good, basic average Mexican. You get a lot. I am a fiend for enchiladas and mole, and that's what I normally get for dinner. It is a LOT of food. You won't leave hungry. For lunch, I had the special - instead of the typically beef tostada, I asked for a 2nd cheese enchilada. These came in red sauce with rice and beans. Good standard food. I was comfortably full. My friend, the KGB, had a dinner order of enchiladas (3 enchiladas, as opposed to 2 on the lunch special) and couldn't finish her meal. The margaritas are good. Again, nothing super special, but they do the job. If you're jonesing for good basic Mexican food and actually want atmosphere and service too, you'll do fine at Hay Caramba. I've been several times, and almost certainly will go again. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3.

This is a great locally owned place that we LOVE to go to! The food is always fresh, hot, and delicious. The drinks are also yummy. If you are in the area make sure you stop in and try it! I don't think you will be disappointed! Make sure to get the table side guacamole!

Food was good, service was fast, place was nice and clean... A bit over-priced if you ask me, for the location... You are paying downtown prices here, but if you don't mind that and parking in a crowded street, I guess its ok.

I work a few blocks away from Hay Caramba and come here often with my co-workers when we want a sit-down meal. I like that they have a few lunch specials to choose from and, although they are a smaller portion than a full dinner, it's still enough food to leave me with food coma when I return to my desk. I've basically tried more than half of the menu at this point and the food has always been great! They have a big bar in the front of the restaurant so we have also been there for after work drinks. This place great for an under-an-hour-sit-down-lunch as well as a dinner date or dinner out with friends/family.

I miss the old location so much. I remember first going here when I was 10 years old because the owners' son Michael passed out cards during class and I begged my mom to take me there. Then along came my new love for Mexican food. Dam you Michael Carranza! My waistline never regained it's taut figure again-oh well. The decor is lovely, the sangria nothing to go nuts over but the fish was awesome as another reviewer mentioned. My particular basket of chips were quite oily which I'm not used to but maybe it was an off day. I feel like they've spent so much money on the decorations that maybe they forgot how to keep the food homey like their last menu. There was something special about it but maybe I came in thinking it would be like that first time 15 years ago having my first burrito with a side of rice and beans. Love your rice and beans still to this day with extra cilantro.

The food here is fine... its not great its not bad. The space is rather large... I do not often dine out in the burbs and the amount of space between each table reminded me I was out in the burbs. The chips... as my rating indicates... are OK... not bad not great. I had a combo plate... and everything was just average... nothing was horrible, nothing was outstanding. Service was great... as were the prices.

My husband and I keep coming back to Hay Caramba for the wonderful food and service. Our favorite menu items are the guacamole, queso fundido, exquisite torta, and enchiladas. The burritos are also amazing. We always get margaritas here as well because they are clearly freshly made and compliment the food very well. We love the coffee as an after dinner treat as well. It has a notable cinnamon hint of flavor that makes it very unique. The specials are always changing and make each visit a new experience. Overall, Hay Caramba is a great place for lunch or dinner with delicious food that will keep you wanting to come back for more.

Hay Caramba restaurant really pulled off Cinco de Mayo. The live mariachi band was a real treat and played on the top of the ornate balcony. We had excellent service from multiple wait staff. I kinda liked the tag team approach, but wasn't sure how they would split the tip though. We had the combo fajitas and combo appetizers. The margaritas were simply A-OK. The best thing about Hay Caramba is the ambiance. They did a very nice job decorating. The food really didn't blow me away and wasn't too highly palatable, so expectations should be lowered.

Never going back. The chips were super hard. There was barely any salsa in our bowl. The fundido was slightly melted - at least it was real cheese - but it wasn't hot. The food was not even lukewarm - it was cold. My mother didn't even eat hers. I was hungry so I ate half. They gave us one of the meals free. The only good thing was the iced tea and the service was average. DO NOT GO THERE. So many other good Mexican restaurants to go to around here. Taco Bell would have been way better.

Nice looking place - skylight, stairs, balcony, outdoor courtyard. Chips are terrible, but I ate them because I was hungry. Entrees were solid. Hay Caramba, if you read your reviews, please fix your chips!

Great place if you're craving the typical mexican food menu (burritos, tacos, quesadillas). I love the margaritas and chips too and decor. Its a perfect place for a date night. My family and I come here alot too. Its decent service and it;s really good when its crowded. Get their flautas! Ive been here when its not crowded and the food was horrible, but its rare that it happens. Didn't look like the owners were there so the staff didnt care about what came out of the kitchen and when. In this experience I got their fajitas and they were NOT sizzling...

I've gone to this place for several years; I went to their old (much smaller) location in the Summit strip mall years and years ago, and was very excited when they moved into their new building. The current location is much brighter and cheerier, and has a high ceiling with skylights and festively painted murals on the walls. They use the space they have very well and the restaurant is typically packed on weekends. During the summer, they open a very small, but nice, patio area that has 6 or so tables. The main selling point for Hay Caramba is probably the service, though I see some of the other reviewers have had unpleasant experiences. Whenever I've been to the restaurant, my party has been waited on by several people-- one person to bring water and chips, another to take drink and food orders, a third to actually bring the food, and various others to bus empty plates, bring refills, etc. Basically, there is a fleet of employees moving through the tables at all times, making sure that everyone is taken care of quickly. The last time I ate there, there was a huge party of 20 or so people in attendance, and from what I could tell they were taken care of very efficiently. I know that some of the other reviews have knocked the food for being too basic or "not authentic enough," but I love it. Though I often go in with the intention of trying something new, I always choose the enchiladas or tacos because they're DELICIOUS! I've heard good things about their egg sandwiches chiles rellenos, and burritos, too, and (despite the negative reviews I've seen here) every entree comes with satisfying beans and rice. Last time I ate there I tried the chicken flautas, and they were pretty solid. Hay Caramba has 4 or 5 different combination platters on their menu, and typically has specials every day. During the lunch hour on weekdays, their specials are very affordable (in the $6-ish range) and draw a crowd of people from the nearby businesses. Their margarita pitchers are nice and potent and come in strawberry and pineapple (in addition to the traditional lime). A very inexpensive, friendly, fun place to eat-- make sure to try a cup of coffee and the sopapillas for dessert!

I ate here on Friday, March 22, and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course there is better Mexican food elsewhere, but I liked the decor of the restaurant, and friendliness of owner. It is family friendly and I will go back just so my boys can enjoy the colors. I am big on substance, but this particular place was so good in other areas that the ok Mexican food was not a deal breaker. I had simple chicken tacos and I could be biased because I am not the biggest fan of shredded chicken.

I have been here three times for lunch. The last two times I got the same thing - the tacos de pollo al pastor. I enjoy it and when I go back will probably order it again. Given that they have this on the menu I am surprised they don't have traditional al pastor tacos on the menu...if they did, I would gladly order them. I think the rest of the menu is your typical Mexican American fare. The salsa is decent and guac tastes fresh. My collegue always get the chicken & veggie soup and it's a big heaping bowl of soup. It looks delicious but I know I'll never order it b/c I'm a taco fiend. I think it's a tad overpriced but a decent place to grab lunch....and they have a small outdoor patio. Downtown Park Ridge is a cute little area so if you stuff yourself at lunch, just take a stroll around town and walk it off!

The family has been eating here for years (into our second decade). They serve consistently good savory Mexican food, tasty chips and salsa, good Margaritas. I can't say I've ever eaten anthing really mind-blowingly creative or mind-expanding here, but that's really not what they're about. They know us when we walk in, and we can always count on a satisfying meal. Good atmosphere and decor, but it can get a little cold in winter with those high ceilings.

I've been going to Hay Caramba since I was in junior high, and remember it back when it had it's old location. Their new location is much, much better- more seating and a nice open atmosphere. However, it does get busy and very loud. It's a fun place to go with family or friends, but not a date place as it can be hard to hear. The portions are huge, and prices are good. I always get the burritos suizos, and they are good- lots of gooey cheese and chicken, nice sauce, and the beans are rice are good too. They give you plenty of chips and fresh salsa- just make sure you don't fill up before dinner!

  • Kay J.

Great atmosphere, great consistent food. If you like "restaurant Mexican", this place gets high marks. The selection is varied, and I've eaten many things from this menu over the years. The quality is consistent, rarely have I had anything that wasn't good. I only remember being disappointed once... I adore Enchaladas Verdes (with green sauce) but theirs was too spicy and too sour. Also, I'm not crazy about their sangria. But, believe me, other entrees are delicious, and the atmosphere, as many other reviewers have noted, is beautiful and the place is spacious. Prices are reasonable for what you get, especially since this place is in Park Ridge, in a nice area just south of downtown. Street parking on Prospect has never been a problem.

    (5)
  • Katherine R.

It's pretty good. It gets crazy packed on the weekends, but they have a nice bar area to wait and have a cocktail. The sangria is pretty good and so are the margaritas. The food is pretty average along with the service. For the price, I think Don Juan's is most economical in that department. Don Juan's over this place everytime for sure. With a better Mexican restaurant in the area, don't bother with this place. You will wait forever for a table for average food.

I decided to go with carryout today. I had the enchilada suiza. I thought it had a good flavor. It also came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were above average. The meal came with salsa. The salsa was medium on the heat scale and had a sweet flavor to it, which I didn't care for personally. I will have to try them again and eat in the restaurant to get a better feel for the food. The restaurant looked very clean and nicely decorated. The staff was also very friendly. Again, I will try it again, but this time eat in.

  • Tom B.

I used to get carry-out from their old location in the Summit all the time when I was growing up, and now sometimes go to their new location when I'm in town visiting family. I insist on dining-in at their new place because I love the space. It's got high ceilings, colorful murals, and a great ambiance, plus it's walking distance to the main part of uptown Park Ridge. The food has always been great, and there are a decent amount of vegetarian selections, which I find is terribly rare at the higher-end Mexican places. Granted, I don't go there regularly like some of the other reviewers, but my food has never been stale. In fact, their guacamole and sour cream have always been notably fresh. One complaint I have is that I hated the mole sauce...it was overwhelmingly bitter and ruined the enchiladas I got. Other than that, though, I've always had great meals from here and will continue to go back.

Great location. Nice decor and bar. I liked it better at its old location in the strip mall behind the theatre. It is not my favorite place for Mexican in the area.

It is so nice to have a local Mexican restaurant that is not a dive. Hay Caramba is much better than Don Juan in Edison Park. Hay Caramba has great M-F lunch specials. The burrito suizas are yummy and I typically get a combo of chicken and ground beef. The atmosphere is great and very clean. The salsa is good with the chips but at times can be pretty spicy. You can ask for a mild sauce if you have someone in your party that can not handel it. Margaritas are always good too!

    (5)
  • Erin V.

Oh, stale chips of Hay Caramba. Somedays you are edible and somedays not so much. Hay Caramba is another downtown Park Ridge lunch option - and since it's within a block or so of work, it's seems to be a frequent choice. This choice for lunch is rather expensive in comparison to the surrounding options. They used to have a lunch special that was about $6, but last time we went, the lunch special was almost $10. Yikes! The margaritas for the after work crowd are pretty good though. And the stale chips are much more edible after a few :)

  • Leilani B.

Beautiful restaurant, lovely outdoor eating area. The food is only so-so. The chorizo nachos were great, the fajitas were average, and the margarita was delicious. I might go back again but I won't be frequenting here, for sure.

  • Chitown F.

I have been going here for a long time. It has always been a pleasant experience. They have always had the same servers and everyone (especially abuela) is great. The prices are amazing here, and the chips and salsa are sure to fill you up before your meal arrives. They have a sweet tequila selection and a lot of beers from south of the border. This place does get bumping on the weekends, but there is a cozy bar for you to pass the time waiting for a table. I am not gonna say it is the best Mexican around, but it is definitely very good and better than any other in the neighborhood. I got the pollo in salsa verde and it was very good. Check this place out if you are in downtown Park Ridge.

This place went downhill after moving into their new location. The salsa and chips are no longer the same.

  • Covert W.

I am never one to turn away from hole in the wall joints, but sometimes that doesn't fly with the people I'm with. With that in mind, a place like Hay Caramba certainly fits the bill when looking for Mexican food in the Park Ridge area. As stated in my other reviews, my barometer dish is typically chile rellenos, and here they don't disappoint. Good level of spiciness, the right amount of cheese (not overstuffed like some places), a tasty sauce with a good consistency, and they come with tortillas.

I love a good marguerita and some mexican food that uses authentic recipes and this restaurant didn't disappoint! It's not that El Sombrero quazzi-Mexican dishes it pretty authentic Mexican cooking. I was pleasantly surprised by the guacamole. The best that's out there in the area. Their salsa is good and has just enough kick to taste good and be light enough for the kids to eat. This is a family friendly atmosphere in a quaint seating area. I've had the chiles rellenos and a great bisteca ranchero. They make a very good ranchero sauce. My wife and two daughters 4 and 7 ate all their food and loved the chicken soup. My 7 year old said it was the best soup ever.

Love their ceviche and flan. Good steak tacos. Get the red mole as a dipping sauce...perfection! Great customer service. Beautiful restaurant and patio. Wish it was open on Sundays!

  • Matthew S.

I have to agree with most of the 3 star reviewers. I think the service was ok and food pretty good. The steak is tasty and the chicken seemed taster than Don Juans actually. The big complaint I have is the salsa. They only have one offering and it's very processed tasting. It almost seems like store bought with some extra items added. Never having been to the old location I can't say I miss it but they really did a nice job with this location. They should invest some time in their salsa or add another choice.

  • Roy A.

This place gets the job done when you're in the mood for some straight up Tex-Mex. Nothing spectacular but if you are craving some, this will get the job done. Pretty crowded on weekends/nights and it's fairly loud. Kids are generally running around as well. Staff is real good and fast and on their toes with everything which is always nice. Not really a destination place for me since there are plenty of "pure" Mexican restaurants or joints that one can visit. But once in a blue moon, I'll be aching for some Tex-Mex and this'll do the job.

    (3)
  • Jay L.

Been coming here for over 2 plus years, the food is definitely higher quality than your average Taco place, seems to not disappoint as far as food, slightly pricey, and service seems to need some re-training in "wow me" school...

    (3)
  • EmmBee L.

The problem here is the price to quality ratio. I've eaten at many a hole-in-the-wall joint where the food was better (i.e. not stale and with some spice, for goodness sake) but the prices were much lower. The place wants to be a dress up and go out joint, but it serves mediocre Mexican food. And charges a premium. I don't get it, I really just do not get it.

    (2)
  • Rob L.

When it first opened waaaaayyy back in the day, this was a cute little place where we dined on some phenomenal Mexican fare. This was when I was young and inexperienced in the ways of food. Fast forward to modern day. The place has moved, expanded, has become even more crowded and my palate has changed. I have shown my stomach gastronomic adventures, exposed it to tantalizing culinary ways outside of your taco and burrito. Sadly I come here now, it isn't bad, but it is no longer amazing. It is just okay. The service is good, especially sometimes handling the large crowds here, the place is quaintly decorated, but it is loud and is not suggested for a romantic dinner for two. There are kids abound, the drinks are okay, it is lively and the food is fine but not what I would rave about. I may come back if out with my mom for dinner, but would I make this a destination place? Um no, I have much closer and better options available to me.

This nice little Mexican restaurant is in a good location in downtown Park Ridge, behind the historic Pickwick Theater. You can count on fresh ingredients, super sangria, and friendly service in this family-run place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
